Sun Energy
The first photovoltaic system
The first 15.2 kW photovoltaic system was built in 2001 as part of the European Community “Thermie” program (1999) in collaboration with Denmark (Cenergia) and Holland (Ecofys) (INNOPEX - Innovative architectural integration of photovoltaic energy in existing buildings in DK, NL, IT). It was installed on the skylight roof and on the southern side of the pavilion. It was mounted on 12 tilt-adjustable panels, that vary the shading according to the season. 180 panels have been installed, 72 on the skylight roof and 108 on the side shelters. This system was designed by Architects Cinzia Abbate and Carlo Vigevano, by Engineer Bruno Masci and manufactured by Gechelin Group. The system powers all the computers in the Museum and many games/exhibits, among which the SOLAR RACE.
The Second Photovoltaic System
The second 18kW photovoltaic system was installed in 2007 in the parking. It was designed by Engineers Mario Gamberale and Stefano Notarnicola and manufactured by Gechelin Group. It is a car shelter consisting of 100 photovoltaic panels. It powers all the electrical devices in the offices, shop, and ticket office.
A monitoring device shows the visitors the amount of energy produced by the 2 photovoltaic systems. The second system was installed thanks to Conto Energia by GSE, the Government incentive for Architectural Integration. Thanks to Conto Energia the Museum gets 0,49 € per Kwh produced, over 20 years, in order to pay back the installation.
