Journeys: Visual arts and theatre for the integration of refugees

sdo2-01-2“I drew a paper boat, like the ones you wear as a hat: there was a migrant aboard, wearing a life jacket. Later that man told me he had arrived in Europe just like that, on a dinghy.” Sibomana

At Explora, “JOURNEYS”, a project co-funded by Creative Europe, a European Union’s programme, to promote refugees’ integration through visual arts and theatre, with the endorsement of Regione Lazio, Roma Capitale and the Presidente del Municipio Roma II. The project – coordinated by ArtReach, a cultural UK agency – is inspired from the Journeys Festival International, which was started in 2013 in Leicester, then spread to Manchester and Portsmouth, and now is in Rome at Explora, in Palermo at CESIE, in Hamburg at Altonale GmbH as partners, and also involves the Municipality of Rieti and Trafo House of Contemporary Arts in Budapest as associated partners.

Events for the Explora visitors, on schedule from April 1st through 9th, suggest telling stories about refugees’ experiences: the key theme is “emotion”. The project involves the artist and urban activist Sibomana, graphic journalist & screenwriter Takoua Ben Mohamed and the ArteStudio association, which has been actively promoting refugee’s integration through workshops and theatre performance. Refugees play a key role, having opposed a proactive vision of the future to the tragic experience of fleeing their home. A refugee is a person who gets into touch with a new world and brings her/his experience, helping improvement, on both human and cultural aspects, towards a universal language.

The Festival will open on March 27th, with the Takoua Ben Mohamed’s exhibition “Behind the veil, by Manuela De Leonardis, on schedule in the Sala Consiliare, in the city of Rieti.

The project will be documented by photographer and film-maker Luigi Narici.
